Snacks, French Signs, and UFC 315: A Road Trip to Montreal

Road Snacks and the Montreal Airbnb
We threw our bags into the trunk. We stocked up on an absurd amount of road trip snacks. Then, we hit the highway toward Quebec. The destination was simple: Montreal, live fight action, and a weekend away.
The drive was pure entertainment. We blasted music. We argued over playlist control. We demolished bags of chips at a record pace. Hours flew by. Before we knew it, we pulled up to our Airbnb. It was a cozy place in a quiet neighborhood with classic spiral staircases out front. Getting the luggage up those steep stairs was a workout in itself. The apartment was fantastic. We unpacked, claimed our beds, and prepared for an unforgettable couple of days.
Lost in Translation: Navigating a French City in English
None of us speak fluent French. We knew Montreal was bilingual, but we quickly realized how reliant we were on English.
The struggle started immediately. Reading street signs felt like a game of complete guess-work. Parking rules were written in dense French text. We were terrified our rental would be towed. When we stopped at a local bakery, we stumbled through basic greetings. Ordering coffee required point-and-smile tactics. The locals were patient and polite. Still, the language barrier added a constant layer of chaos to the trip. It was embarrassing, hilarious, and humbling all at once.
Always double-check Montreal parking signs. Decoding French street regulations is practically an Olympic sport.
Montreal vs. Toronto: A Tale of Two Cities
Coming from Toronto, Montreal hits completely differently. Toronto is all about towering modern glass skyscrapers, fast-paced hustle, and strict grid layouts. Montreal feels like a totally different country.
- Architecture: Toronto is sleek and modern. Montreal is filled with historic stone buildings, European charm, and winding alleyways.
- Vibe and Pace: Toronto always feels like it is rushing to a meeting. Montreal feels relaxed, artistic, and focused on living in the moment.
- Food Scene: Toronto has incredible global diversity. Montreal takes the crown for patio culture, fresh bakeries, and legendary late-night poutine.
- Nightlife: Toronto shuts down early. Montreal keeps the energy alive well past midnight with vibrant streets and music.
Fight Night at Bell Centre: UFC 315
The energy inside the Bell Centre was absolute electric. Nearly 20,000 screaming fans packed the arena for UFC 315. We made our way to our seats just as the main card kicked off. The main event was the one we all came to see: Belal Muhammad defending his welterweight belt against Australia's Jack Della Maddalena.
Here is how the five-round war played out in the octagon:
- Round 1: Belal came out aggressive. He tried to establish heavy wrestling pressure and push JDM against the fence. JDM stayed calm. He used slick footwork and sharp jabs to keep distance, landing crisp combinations whenever Belal closed the gap.
- Round 2: JDM found his boxing rhythm. His hands were fast and accurate. Belal kept marching forward, landing a few solid hooks, but JDM’s head movement made Belal miss repeatedly.
- Round 3: A grueling, fast-paced round. Belal managed to push JDM against the cage and work from the clinch, landing short knees. JDM broke free late in the round and answered with heavy body shots.
- Round 4: JDM’s takedown defense proved to be elite. Belal shot for multiple double-leg takedowns, but JDM stuffed every single attempt. JDM picked Belal apart from the outside with relentless jab-cross combinations.
- Round 5: JDM put on a masterclass in the final five minutes. He poured on the offense, landing over fifty significant strikes in this round alone. Belal showed incredible heart, but JDM completely took control and secured the unanimous decision to become the new champ.
Post-Fight Fun in Montreal
Leaving the Bell Centre, the energy in the streets was wild. Tens of thousands of fight fans poured out into the warm night air.
We wandered into Old Montreal to celebrate. We found a small late-night spot and ordered massive plates of hot poutine topped with rich gravy and squeaky cheese curds. It was the ultimate post-fight meal. We spent the rest of the night walking through illuminated cobblestone streets, recapping every punch from the main event, and taking in the city atmosphere. Montreal delivered on every single front.
